Project Outline:
In this project, I was tasked to reinterpret compound words and puns through visual design. The objective was to move beyond literal meaning and use humour, exaggeration, and conceptual thinking to create engaging graphics. Using Photoshop and image manipulation techniques, I developed a series of visual outcomes inspired by woodcut illustration, applying design principles such as contrast, unity, and repetition to strengthen communication. The goal was to train lateral thinking and explore how language can be transformed into playful visual storytelling.
I explored compound words by selecting puns like “bookworm” and “keyboard” and visually reinterpreting them through humour and symbolic combination. I began with sketch ideation to experiment with different visual directions before moving into Photoshop to refine the compositions. Inspired by woodcut illustration aesthetics, I sourced and edited high-resolution images, layering and arranging them to enhance clarity and contrast. Throughout the process, I applied design principles such as unity, repetition and visual hierarchy to ensure that each pun remained readable while still feeling playful and unexpected.
